What is a VPN? A Complete Guide

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a service that encrypts your internet connection and hides your IP address, protecting your privacy online.

Includes AES-256 encryption, a kill switch, and DNS leak protection.

Why people use a VPN

Common reasons include private browsing on public Wi-Fi, reducing ISP tracking, accessing work resources remotely, and protecting devices on untrusted networks.

How AstraGuard helps

AstraGuardVPN applies AES-256 encryption, supports OpenVPN, and includes kill switch and DNS leak protection across major platforms.

VPN vs Proxy vs Tor

A VPN encrypts all device traffic and hides your IP. A proxy usually covers one app and often does not encrypt. Tor encrypts and anonymizes via relays but is typically browser-only and slower.

Steps

  1. Understand VPN basics — A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a remote server, hiding your IP address and encrypting all traffic.
  2. Choose a VPN provider — Select a VPN with strong encryption (AES-256), a kill switch, DNS leak protection, and servers in locations you need.
  3. Install the VPN app — Download and install the VPN app on your device — available for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux.
  4. Connect to a server — Open the app, select a server location, and tap Connect. Your traffic is now encrypted and your IP masked.
